Printed in India on hand-made paper. Unpaginated, with 6 handpainted illustrations, and 8 tipped in colour plates. Includes loose typed insert at front from the publisher First Edition. A little rubbing to the edges and slight marking to the covers. The contents are in excellent condition. A very good example of this artist's book created by Clemente in 1980 and 1981 in collaboration with miniature painters from Orissa and Jaipur. Clemente lived in India between 1973 and 1982, becoming increasingly interested in Indian artistic, religious and folk traditions. Clemente was also a leading member of the Transavanguardia Movement which sought to reintroduce emotion, expression, representation and symbolism. With its clear, simple, naïve figures overlaid with symbolist dream-like elements, Pinxit marries Western neo-avant-garde with the traditions of Indian art. "Monty" to whom this copy was presented is Monty Montgomery, the actor and film director, perhaps best known for his role in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Montgomery's sister, the photographer Jeanette Montgomery Barron, was introduced to Clemente by Monty. She went on to photograph many of the leading artists of 1980s New York such as Warhol, Basquiat and Mapplethorpe but Clemente (who moved to New York in 1982) was the first artist she photographed.
