The Patek Philippe reference 5170 was introduced twelve years ago, as the latest chapter in a legacy of manually wound, two-register chronographs. Replacing the Lemania-powered 5070, the reference 5170 was originally produced exclusively in yellow gold, as the 5170J, before later adopting the grey-gold case featured in this example, the reference 5170G-001*.
Reminiscent of a vintage Patek Philippe ref. 130, the reference 5170G-001 is designed in a similar vein to admired Patek Philippe chronographs of the 1940s, displaying straight hands, with a white dial and applied, oversized Breguet numerals. The watch is also classically sized at 39.4mm in diameter, fitting neatly underneath a cuff.
Notably, the reference 5170G-001 displays a pulsometer, a feature used in early “doctor’s” watches, further adding to the watch’s vintage appeal. Overall, the dial layout is cleanly designed, with the chronograph highly legible in a variety of lighting conditions. The 5170G-001 also has a stop-seconds feature, making accurate synchronisation easier when the crown is pulled.
The watch integrates Patek Philippe’s very first in-house chronograph movement, boasting several patented innovations and technical refinements, designed to improve functionality and dependability, over that of previous Lemania-based calibres. The calibre CH 29-535 PS movement is based on the classic architecture of column-wheel control – a hallmark of many great mechanical chronographs.
If sold within the United Kingdom, this Patek Philippe Chronograph 5170G-001 will be subject to 20% VAT.
